Leeds United youngster Alfie Hughes is on trial at Newcastle United, with a permanent move on the cards, according to Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder.
The Lowdown: Hughes profiled
Hughes, who described himself as a ‘creative player’, penned a professional deal at Elland Road back in July.
The 19-year-old, primarily a left-winger, has made just one Under-23 appearance this season and hasn’t been in the squad since November. His pro deal expires in the summer, and it now seems as if a move to Newcastle is on the cards.
The Latest: Ryder’s update
Ryder shared an update on Hughes on Wednesday morning, revealing the Magpies have made an out of window signing by bringing Hughes to the club on trial.
The youngster reportedly impressed in a 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Monday evening, with sources inside the Toon’s academy informing the reliable reporter that a permanent move is now under consideration.

The Verdict: Not a disaster?
It seems as if Hughes will be the first player to leave the club under Jesse Marsch, but at this moment in time, you’d expect it won’t be considered a huge loss.
Leeds obviously saw something in the attacker to hand him professional terms in the summer, however, he hasn’t kicked on during the current campaign and never threatened to break into the first-team setup.
It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Newcastle, but it’s good to know the Whites have a number of exciting young attackers coming through, like Max Dean, who has netted six times for the Under-23s this season.
